The thing that created such confusions about of God is that, throughout time, men have been adding up a lot of properties to the entity.
We saw how the societal norms and their reverence were added to the deities, and how the questions unsolvable by men were immediately added to the God’s knowledge. We still use the phrase, ‘Only God knows…’ or ‘Leave it in the hands of God…’ These little actions added up and created a single entity who is responsible for the conduct of an entire universe (what a workload!), from fulfilling individual wishes to creating stars that were to revolve around Earth!
It is, of course, a natural course of action for humankind collectively, with no single person to blame. As a species, our collective psychology tends to exalt its expectations from the God over time. Our lives filled with expectations and disappointments leading to joy, sorrow, remorse, punishments, jealousy, fear, loathing, and so on, due to the pressing force of karma, need a soothing hope that someday, somehow life would get better.
With the fear of future, the notion of hope provided by God has always been helping us confine ourselves to the present, leaving the future in the hands of the all-powerful guiding entity. This means a personal notion of God to guide man was and is needed ever since man started thinking.
On the other hand, questions about our existence, which are also part of our mind’s intuition and curiosity, required answers to questions like, “who created the rivers, the mountains and the oceans?” and “Who lives in the stars in the sky?”. These answers were to be simple enough to be understood by the primitive, common human.
Right now, with technological developments, we at least have a clue of what’s going on around, outside and inside us. But for the primitive, developing human who was just as curious as we are right now, a factor that was responsible for creation of all the things around him was necessary, and it was better if the entity was just as conscious as him! This means that a universal notion of God was needed back then.
The religions, right from their beginning as simple naturism, combined both the above notions of God into a single conscious entity, to maintain a simple belief structure. They speak of the God to be a conscious entity or even a person! Some say this conscious God has no form but only function. But it is pretty obvious by now that it is the very energy which we strained ourselves to understand its working, is the God we are used to worshipping throughout history!
All the philosophers who propounded the religions were talking about energy as a conscious entity. Owing to unavailability of words to describe the energy in its natural state, these philosophers explained the energy’s working in a simple way through which a common man could understand.
The problem is that we seldom dig deep to find the truth. Every time some knowledge is passed on to the next generation, only less than half the information is given and taken. Three thousand years is a very long time, and a lot of generations have lived and died. Every generation added or deleted some information in the original text and made the documents obscure. The effects these changes had on the societies were, are and will be huge!
Now to the next part. So far, we confined ourselves to just one perspective about God, the one side from religions. Religions are the primary authorities in our approach towards God, or at least, we have been trained to think so. But there are other perspectives surrounding God too. I mean, the religions don’t own the Gods; they just propound their own ideas about the factor.
So, let’s look into the other views about God, which means our next question is, why did people accept the notions of Gods and religions?
