27. Subconscious and Conscious/ Emotions

When an animal gets hungry, it finds food; predators hunt, while a prey scrounges for food. When their need is fulfilled, that is, after their meal, the instincts go away and don’t show up until they get hungry again.

But for the sixth sense, the question of future possibilities of the same need arises (!), be it for food or shelter or anything else. The need and the actions needed and done for fulfilling the need eventually give rise to habits, and habits, in turn, become practices. The practices are used for developing experiences and experiences promote new ideas and at the base of all this lies the thought process.

The subconsciousness of man is the same as that of the five-sensed beings, but the sixth sense, being able to understand a situation and visualise it any number of times, thinks of the chances of similar situations in the past or present or the future. In short, the sixth sense fully understands the concept of time. This ability to understand the past and the future in any situation becomes the conscious part of the human psyche.

The subconscious (which understands the present) provided by the first 5 senses and the conscious part (which understands the past and the future through thoughts) provided by the sixth sense, balance together to form the construct called mind. This combined experience of the past, present and the future by the human mind is called consciousness.

Emotions

The working of emotions in the human subconscious is well known, with movies like Inside Out describing how they work, brilliantly.

Just like thoughts, emotions too have their base in time. Anticipation, rage, remorse, ecstasy, amazement, joy, etc., each of these emotions has its base in our past, present or future. Thoughts about the future give anticipation, while thoughts about the past can give remorse, and the thoughts about the present give vigilance. The situations we face in our daily lives along with our experiences create varied reactions in our minds, which are expressed through emotions. And thanks to the hormones in our bodies, each emotion has a unique effect on the physical body and the soul!

The question whether living beings that possess up to 5 senses feel emotions is still under debate, since they act mostly based on instinct, and their emotional intelligence is confined to a short period of time. Animals feel love, joy, pain, and more, but the complete expression of emotions, as in humans, is not observed in them.

Even so, when we give a thought about emotions, we can see that any emotion expressed by us humans, exists only in the present time and not in our future or the past. The thoughts about the pasts and the futures give varied emotions only in the present. So, organisms up to 5 senses, possessing only the subconscious can experience only a few emotions and that too about the present moment only.

Understanding how subconscious works in different sensed beings will give us a better picture of thoughts and emotions.
